Since 2002, the Albanian Railways (HSH) has been operating as an anonymous commercial company with 100% state capital represented by the Ministry of Finance and Economy and the area of responsibility supervised by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy.
The direction and administration of the daily activity of the Company is exercised by the Administrator selected/appointed by the Supervisory Council who simultaneously observes and supervises the implementation of commercial policies by the Administrator of the Company.
HSH performs the function of the state operator of the railway network of Albania (transport of goods and passengers). The main passenger terminal in this railway system is at Durrës Railway Station in the Port area. The transport of goods and passengers is carried out respectively by the operator of the Goods Business Unit and that of the Passenger Business Unit, using the Railway Infrastructure that is the property of the State. The railway transport service of both goods and passengers is carried out only within the Albanian railway network.
The Rolling Stock Maintenance Business Unit (locomotive and wagons) carries out the maintenance and repair of rolling stock (locomotives and freight and passenger wagons).
The Albanian railway network extends towards Shkodra in a northerly direction; towards Vlora in the southern orientation and towards Pogradec in the eastern orientation.
